IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY

OF THE 7TH GRADE OF SMPN 12 BATANGHARI

BY USING CARDS

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

The improvement of communication skills is one of the aims in English language learning. There are four skills that should be mastered in language learning, reading, listening, speaking and writing in order to obtain those skills students need to have enough vocabularies.

In order improve the skills above, in teaching and learning process, the first thing to do is to master vocabulary for the students, because it is a very important element in language learning. By having enough vocabularies, students will be able to hear, speak, read, or write in English.

The aims cannot be achieved successfully if students’ vocabularies are still low. The problem was found on 7th grade students in class B. there are 29 students in the class. They have two meetings in a week learn English of 5 hour: one learning hour is the same as 40 minutes (5 x 40 minutes).

Students lack of vocabulary that make them harder to understand some reading material given, answer some questions given by the teacher, and do another task given.

So, in writer’s opinion, if this problem is not solved, we can ensure that students will face an even worse problem on higher level. Moreover, most of the students of SMPN 12 Batanghari have not got English from their primary school.

Based on the description above, the writer is motivated to fix the teaching and learning process specially English language learning in terms of “improving vocabulary of the 7th grade students in class B of SMPN 12 Batanghari by using cards”.

1.2 Research Question

The research will answer a question about “how to improve students vocabulary of the 7th grade B of SMPN 12 Batanghari by using card?

1.3 Purpose of Study

This research is aimed to:

1. Improve students’ vocabulary

2. Help the students learning English

3. Enrick teachers teaching methods interms of vocabulary teaching.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The result of this research is hoped to give some benefits for:

1. Teacher to evaluate their teaching process in the class. They can also share their experiences to their colleagues so that other people will also gain knowledge. Teacher can improve their professionalism, build their self confidence, and give them chances to particular actively improving their knowledge and skills

2. Teacher to add their teaching methods teaching English

3. Students so they can master the vocabulary easily

HAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LETERATURE

2.1 The Definition of Vocabulary

According to Hidayat (1996:1), from material point of view language is a group of words understood by the speakers or hearers. So if one want to learn a language, he/she should remember the words in that language, at least 50.000 words (not including the derivation). It is impossible to remember such many word in English, but the linguists came to an agreement that 5.000 words is enough in order to be able to read and speak.

Mc Carty and felicity O’Dell (2000:4) stated that in order to be able to speak and write in one language, we need at least 1-2.000 words. Furthermore, horn by (1975:2) states that vocabulary is the total number of words establish a language and know by everybody. In addition, peter A Napa 91991:3) said that vocabulary is components of language and that no language exists without word. Words are signs or symbols for ideas we should have, so we communicate more effectively.

Vocabulary plays very important role developing the four language skills (reading, speaking, listening and writing) if the students want to use English for communication the students must have rich vocabulary, so the teacher must have many ways to develop the vocabulary students. According Mackey (1967) in Liliswarni (1998:4).

2.2 The Importance of Memory In Improving Vocabulary

A human has several powers/abilities. They are the powers/ability to remember, the ability to think, the ability to create something, the ability to feel, and ability to have a willing the ability will function well if it is well formed and developed as a result, it should be trained.

One of the abilities within a human is the ability to remember. The ability to remember can be defined as the ability of a human’s soul to express or actualize things or concepts that have been received by his/her soul. The ability to remember in learning process is very important especially in improving English vocabularies. According Hodoxo (1979) in team MGMP Bahasa Inggrish (2008:3).

2.3 Vocabulary In The Cards System

To remember the words effectively, according to Hidayat 91996:2) we need to:

1. a. everyday use your time to study word

b. to control some words, you have to study vocabulary with card system, you can write 5 or 10 word in a card, that you have prepared ways (take) cartons and make cards 10 cm x 7 cm, and then in first card page write 5 or 10 word in English and pronounce. Translate in second card page and then learning by heart.

2. In remembering and adding English vocabularies, we can make list of words by:

a. Finding the synonyms

b. Finding the closest words that have the closest meaning if we can’t find the exact synonym for the word.

c. Finding the antonyms

d. Another way of enriching new words/ vocabularies is by remembering the words one by one and keep using repeating them

2.4 The Use of Cards As A Media In Teaching Vocabulary According To Sriyono (1992:126)

a. Make a more intersting lesson

b. Save more time

c. Fix the result of learning

d. Help the slow-learners

e. Raise student’s

f. Attention and motivation

g. Make a more concrete learning

h. Maka amore fun and live learning situation

i. Train the students to observe or do a research on something.

2.5 Teaching of Vocabulary

Now a days, teaching english at Junior high school integrated four skills; reading, listening, speaking and writing but all of these focused at grammar, vocabulary, pronouncition and speaking used to support the four skills above (GBPP, Kurikulum Sekolah Lanjutan Pertama 1994).

There are many kinds of media be used inteaching vocabulary. There the writer only used card. Before continue the explanation. Now let’s see what is media. According el Araby, (1974) in Liliswarni, (1998:5) = media are any material, program or machine used to help the explain his lesson better.

Media are regarded as central elements in the approach to systematic instruction. Brown, (1977) in Lilis Warni, (1998:5). Media is plural of medium, the term has very broad meaning, media are material things to provide the vehicle for the massage. I yon Adlis in Lilis Warni, (1998:5).


CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

3.1 Subject of the Research

The research will be conducted at the 7’h Grade B student of SMPN 12 Batanghari on odd semester, academic year 2008/2009. There are 29 students in the class 17 girls and 12 boys. They come from various primary schools which not learned English.

3.2 Procedure

The research will be done in 3 cycles : one cycle consist of there meetings. The stages are: planning, action, observation, reflection.

A. Planning

1. Teacher will open the lesson, greet the students and motivate them.

2. Teacher will give the vocabularies through cards based on the material given on each meeting.

3. Teacher will give texts related to vocabularies given.

4. Teacher will make the lesson plan of teaching process.

5. Students will be asked to remember the words given.

6. Teacher will make the evaluation tool at the end of each cycle in order to see student’s ability in understanding the material.


B. Action

The research will be done on odd semester, academic year 2008/2009 in SMPN 12 Batanghari on the 7th Grade B.

C. Observation

This is the stage where the observation is done by using observation sheets the have been prepared before based on the planned cycles meeting.

D. Reflection

Reflection is done based on the collected from the observation sheets and test done at the end of every meeting the data will then be analyzed to see wetter the aims of the lesson have been active or not and students vocabulary have been improved.

The cards system is done to help the remember the vocabulary related to material given in the class.
